Sectional Sofa Dimensions: A Sizing Guide (Standard vs Large vs Oversized)

Every week I get some version of the same question: "But how big is it actually?" Product photos and renders can be deceiving, so let's go through real sectional sofa dimensions, no guessing involved.

Sectional sofa dimensions are the single biggest thing people get wrong before buying online. Not because retailers lie about them, but because a sofa that looks perfectly proportioned in a photo can eat 12 feet of your living room in real life. This guide breaks down standard vs large vs oversized sectional sofa dimensions using our actual product specs, plus what I've learned from customers who measured right (and a couple who didn't).

Our promise on sectional sofa dimensions

Every dimension we list on a product page is the exact measurement of that product. Not a rounded estimate, not "roughly." If we say 133.5" x 89", that's what shows up at your door. What actually surprises most customers is the opposite problem: the sofa looks bigger in person than it did in photos. The numbers don't move. Your sense of scale does, once there's a real piece of furniture filling the corner of your room instead of a photo on a screen.

Standard vs Large vs Oversized Sectional Sofa Dimensions

Because Garelli sectionals are modular, size isn't one number, it's how many pieces you combine. Every configuration also comes in two depth options: Classic (44" per section) or Compact (40" per section) for tighter rooms. Here's how the tiers actually measure up, using Classic depth:

Tier Configuration Overall footprint Price
Standard 3-Piece Modular Sofa 133" x 44" $2,850
Standard 4-Piece Modular Classic Sectional 133.5" x 89" $3,300
Large 6-Piece Oversized Modular Classic Sectional 177" x 133" $4,600
Large 6-Piece Oversized Sectional (U-Shape) 177" x 89" x 89" (each side) $4,250
Oversized 7-Piece Oversized Modular Sectional 177" x 89" x 133" $5,100
Oversized 10-Piece Oversized Modular Sectional (U-Shape) 356" wide, chaise on each side $8,800

Seat depth (35" Classic, 32" Compact), seat height (20"), and overall height (32") stay consistent across every configuration on purpose. It means you can start with a 3-Piece now and add a corner or an armless chair in a couple of years without ending up with mismatched proportions. That's the whole point of buying modular instead of a fixed sectional.

How to Measure Your Room Before You Order

  • Measure the wall, not the room. Tape out the full footprint (width x depth) directly on your floor with painter's tape. It's the fastest way to see if a configuration actually fits.
  • Leave walking space. Keep at least 30 to 36 inches clear in front of the sofa for a walkway, more if it's a main path through the room.
  • Check doorway and hallway width. Because every Garelli configuration is modular, each piece arrives and moves through your home separately. No single piece exceeds 10" of arm thickness or 32" of overall height, so doorway clearance is rarely the problem it is with one-piece sectionals.
  • Account for seat depth, not just footprint. A 35" seat depth (Classic) feels noticeably different from a 32" seat depth (Compact) if you're shorter or prefer sitting more upright.

A Real Example: When "Oversized" Doesn't Fit the Room You Planned

I had a customer a few weeks ago who ordered a 7-Piece sectional for his living room. One corner piece ended up bigger than the layout actually needed, so instead of returning it, he moved it into another room and started using it as a reading chair. When he wants extra seating for a get-together, he brings it back in. That's the real value of buying modular: get the dimensions close, and you can still adjust after delivery without buying a whole new sofa.

Which Sectional Sofa Size Fits Your Room

My rule of thumb after selling these for a while: in a small living room, stick to a 3-Piece or 4-Piece sofa. In a large room or open floor plan, go for the U-shape or a 6 to 7-piece configuration. Undersized sectional sofa sizes in a big room just mean you're staring at empty floor space you paid to leave open.

How Garelli Sectional Sofa Dimensions Compare to 7th Avenue and RH

The clearest comparison is our 4-Piece Classic Sectional against the closest configuration from 7th Avenue and RH. All three land within an inch or two of each other on footprint.

Garelli 4-Piece Classic 7th Avenue 4-Seat (Extra-Deep) RH Cloud Modular 4-Piece (Luxe)
Footprint 133.5" x 89" 132" wide, 47" section depth 134" x 90"
Seat depth 35" Not listed separately 25"
Price $3,300 $5,350 $11,280 regular, $7,890 for members
Delivery White glove, nationwide, 1 to 3 weeks White glove only in Southern California and the Bay Area, boxes elsewhere, 4 to 6 weeks $299 delivery fee, about 5 to 6 weeks
Covers Removable, machine washable Removable, machine washable on delicate Dry clean only

The footprints are nearly identical. What changes is the price, and whether white glove delivery is actually included everywhere in the country instead of two regions. 7th Avenue and RH both make solid furniture, that's fair to say. Where they win: 7th Avenue has physical showrooms if you want to sit on it before buying, and RH has a much bigger fabric catalog if color options matter more to you than price.

When This Is Not For You

  • If you need furniture delivered tomorrow. We do white glove delivery nationwide, and outside Florida that's 1 to 3 weeks (24 to 48 hours if you're local to Fort Lauderdale). If you need something same-week, look elsewhere.
  • If you want to sit on it before buying. We don't have showrooms yet. If trying before buying matters more to you than price, a brand with physical stores fits that need better.
  • If you need a big fabric library. We currently offer three colors: Off-White, Ivory, and Grey. If color customization is non-negotiable, that's worth knowing before you order.
  • If your room genuinely can't fit even our Compact option. A 3-Piece Compact footprint is 120" x 40". If that doesn't work in your space, the issue isn't the brand, it's the room, and no sectional will solve it.

Ready to Measure Your Space?

Every product page lists the full spec sheet so you can tape it out on your floor before you order. If you're planning for a bigger room, start with the large and oversized configurations, or read the Oversized Sectional Buying Guide for the full breakdown of which configuration fits which room. If you're comparing footprints against an L versus U layout, the U-Shaped vs L-Shaped Sectional guide covers that decision in more depth.

Sectional Sofa Dimensions: FAQ

What's the standard depth of a Garelli sectional sofa?

Every configuration comes in two depth options: Classic at 44" per section, or Compact at 40" per section for smaller rooms. Seat depth is 35" on Classic and 32" on Compact.

How much floor space do I need for an oversized sectional?

Our 7-Piece configuration needs roughly 177" x 133" of floor space (Classic depth), and the 10-Piece U-Shape needs 356" of total width across both sides. Tape out the exact footprint from the product page before ordering.

Will my sectional fit through my doorway?

Almost always, yes. Because the sofa is modular, each piece ships and moves through your home separately. No single piece exceeds 10" of arm thickness or 32" of overall height, so a standard doorway handles it fine.

What if I order the wrong size?

We offer 14-day returns, and because the sofa is modular you can often solve a sizing mismatch by moving a piece to another room instead of returning the whole set.

Do the dimensions online match what actually arrives?

Yes. The measurements on each product page are exact, not estimates. The one thing that surprises most people is that the sofa tends to look larger in person than it did in photos, even though the numbers never change.
